What is Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY)?

The Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) is a government-backed saving campaign launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January 2015 as part of the *"Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao"* initiative. Fully regulated by the Ministry of Finance, it offers one of the highest guaranteed debt interest rates in India.

Designed to secure the long-term wealth of the girl child, SSY allows parent-guardians to invest money specifically dedicated to planning their daughter's higher education and marriage. The scheme also features the prized **EEE (Exempt-Exempt-Exempt)** tax status under the Income Tax Act.

SSY Calculation Rules: Deposit vs. Maturity Period

A core detail that many simple online calculators model incorrectly is the difference between deposit tenure and lock-in tenure:

  1. 15 Years Deposit Term: Guardians are required to make deposits annually for a period of exactly 15 years from the date of account opening.
  2. 21 Years Maturity Term: The account remains active and continues to mature for a total period of 21 years. From Year 16 to Year 21, no new deposits are permitted, but the accumulated interest continues to compound annually at the prevailing rate!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

An SSY account can be opened at any time from the birth of the girl child up to the age of 10 years. Only one account is permitted per girl child, with a maximum of two accounts per family (three in case of triplets/twins).
A minimum deposit of ₹250 and a maximum of ₹1,50,000 can be made in a financial year. If the minimum ₹250 is not deposited, the account will be defaulted and can be revived with a small ₹50 penalty.
Partial withdrawals of up to 50% of the account balance are permitted for the girl child's higher education once she reaches the age of 18 or passes Class 10. The account can also be prematurely closed for marriage after she turns 18.
